New bird flu epicenters emerge in eastern India

H5N1 bird flu detected in India's eastern state of West Bengal continues to spread after being confirmed by India's government on January 14, the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) reported health authorities in New Delhi as saying. On Thursday (January 28), health authorities said culling operations, which began on January 21, are on-going after new epicenters started to emerge in the state.

In eastern India's province of West Bengal, an outbreak of bird flu has been reported, prompting authorities to immediately start a culling operation in the area, according to the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS). The outbreak was reported on Thursday (January 14) in the Murshidabad district, and The Telegraph quoted Utpal Bhandra, sub-divisional officer, as saying, "So far, 4,000 birds have died." Officials are deploying five teams to commence culling operations as of Thursday, and IANS reports that at least 20 more teams will be put into action on Friday (January 15) in almost a 1.5 mile (3 km) radius of Hazrabati and Nagar areas of Khargram block.
