Sri Lankan officials prepare for possible dengue outbreak

Sri Lankan health officials say they are stepping up efforts to avoid a dengue outbreak in the capital, Colombo. According to the UN's Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN), the Ministry of Health's Epidemiology Unit says that 1,806 dengue cases were reported in the city in May.

Over 75 people have been killed and over 13,500 people have been infected by dengue fever between January and the end of April, according to Sri Lankan media reports. According to Asia News, epidemiologists with the Dengue Eradication Program have warned that the disease could spread because of the coming rainy season.

Sri Lanka's Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health reported that a dengue fever outbreak in the country has taken the lives of 63 people so far this year, the Colombo Page newspaper reported. A total of 10,950 dengue cases have been reported so far this year, versus 3,096 cases reported during the same period last year, the newspaper reported.

Caused largely by late monsoon rains at the end of 2009, some districts in Sri Lanka have been severely affected by an epidemic of dengue fever, the UN Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN) reported. According to Sri Lanka's government Epidemiology Unit data, the worst-affected district by the mosquito-borne disease is Jaffna, which tallied about 1,580 dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever cases that were reported through hospital admissions for both January and February 2010, The Nation reported on Sunday (March 7).

Dengue fever, a disease that afflicted 2,227 people in Sri Lanka in 2009, is spreading once again, especially in Sri Lanka's northern Jaffna peninsula, according to data released by the Epidemiology Unit of Sri Lanka. The number of infected with the mosquito-borne disease has passed 8,000 in the first two months of 2010, with 46 of them being fatal, according to the Epidemiology Unit on February 26.

The Epidemiological Unit of Sri Lanka's Health Ministry reported Thursday (August 27) that the number of dengue cases in the country has risen to 24,395 while 245 people died of the disease. According to the Xinhua news agency, of the cases this year, the highest number of patients was reported from June, totaling 7,048, followed by July with 6,858 cases.

Sri Lanka's Epidemiological Unit of the Ministry of Health said Monday (Aug 3) that the number of deaths due to dengue fever in the country had risen to 227, while a total of 20,896 cases have been reported, according to the Colombo Page and China's official Xinhua news agency. This is a sharp increase from last year, in which 4,156 dengue cases and 85 deaths were reported in all of 2008, according to Xinhua and the Colombo Page.

The UN's top official in Sri Lanka said conditions at a huge-government-run camp for IDPs called Menik Farm are still unsatisfactory, despite some improvements, the UN Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN) reported.
