Monsoon-triggered landslide kills 10 in Bangladesh

Thirteen people were killed in Bangladesh Thursday (July 3) when heavy monsoon rains caused widespread flooding and triggered a landslide in a southeastern district. The heavy rains have brought rivers over their banks in at least six districts, including those along the Brahmaputra River that flows into the northern part of Bangladesh from India before emptying into the Bay of Bengal.

China ends talks with Dalai Lama envoys

Dozens injured across India amid Hindu Kashmir protests

Two people were killed and dozens were injured Thursday (July 3) as Hindus protesting the reversal of a controversial land transfer in Muslim-majority Indian-controlled Kashmir (IcK) took to the streets in several states across the country for the first time. Police enforced a curfew Thursday in the town on Indore in central Madhya Pradesh state where two people were killed as Hindu protesters clashed with Muslim residents and police responded by opening fire and using tear gas to disperse the crowd, Reuters reported.

Mongolian capital returns to normal after deadly election riots

Life in Mongolia's capital, Ulan Bator, was returning to normal on Thursday (July 3), although it was still reportedly somewhat tense two days after deadly riots broke out in the city over alleged election fraud. A four-day state of emergency remained in place after the violence which erupted Tuesday (July 1) night left at least five people dead and over 300 others injured.

Philippine police blamed communist rebels for a grenade attack Thursday (July 3) that killed four people and injured 11 in a bakery on the southern island of Mindanao. The attack occurred early Thursday when two men and a woman riding a motorcycle threw a grenade into a bakery in Nabunturan town in Compostela Valley, an area of Mindanao that has seen several recent attacks by rebels of the communist New People's Army (NPA), according to Reuters.

Dozens killed in fresh Sri Lanka clashes

The Sri Lankan army said Thursday (July 3) that at least 43 combatants have been killed in the latest fighting to hit Sri Lanka's embattled northern regions. Almost all of the reported dead were separatist Tamil Tiger rebels, with only one government soldier reported killed by the army, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

The US will boost its military presence in Afghanistan amid stepped us violence as 2008 is shaping up to be another violent year in which attacks are up by 40 percent compared to the same time period last year. Fighting in Afghanistan claimed more than 6,500 lives in 2007.
