China requests international support for quake-affected southwest

CHINA_NEW062.jpg Beijing said Thursday (May 15) that it would accept international aid to deal with the aftermath of the powerful 7.9-magnitude earthquake that shook China's southwest on Monday (May 12). Beijing appealed for basic equipment to help rescue operations and said it needed cranes, rubber boats, hammers and shovels, the BBC reported.

Local poll violence claims four lives in eastern India

Four people were killed and at least 15 others injured in eastern India's West Bengal state on Wednesday (May 14) in separate incidents during the second phase of a contentious local polling process, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported. According to police, clashes between the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) and the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) resulted in three people dead in Amjhara village.
Militant attacks kill at least 11 in northeastern India

Gunmen first attacked four cement trucks in North Cachar Hills district, some 180 miles (290 km) south of Assam's main city of Guwahati, killing 10 people, AFP cited a senior police official as saying.

WFP warns of food crisis as Myanmar rice harvest destroyed

The deputy country director of the UN's World Food Program (WFP) in Myanmar (Burma) said Thursday (May 15) that the country faces a major food crisis as the dry season harvest that accounts for 25 percent of annual rice production was wiped out by category-3 Tropical Cyclone Nargis. The official death toll from Nargis, which struck Myanmar's southwestern Irrawaddy Division on May 2, reached 43,318 on Thursday, with nearly 28,000 still reported missing, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

At least 25 dead from rebel fighting in Sri Lanka's restive north

Sri Lanka's defense ministry said Thursday (May 15) that at least 25 people were killed in the latest round of fighting to hit Sri Lanka's embattled northern region. The ministry said that troops destroyed rebel bunkers and killed at least 21 Tamil Tiger rebels in separate clashes.

Suicide bomb attack in western Afghanistan leaves at least 18 dead

At least 18 people, including policemen, were killed and several wounded in a suicide bomb attack in western Afghanistan today (Thursday, May 15). According to reports, a suicide bomber dressed as a woman detonated explosives near a police station in a crowded market in Farah province's Del Aram district, killing at least six policemen, 12 civilians and wounding more than 20 others.

Missile attack kills at least 12 in Pakistan's northwest

PakFATAagencies1.jpg At least 12 people were killed Wednesday (May 14) when drone aircraft fired two missiles at a suspected Islamic militant compound in the tribal areas of northwestern Pakistan, near the Afghan border. Although neither the US nor Pakistan has confirmed the air strike, it was similar to several that have been carried out by US aircraft based in Afghanistan, the BBC reported.
